Listening...

Of all the human activities that we have, none is more relaxing to me than merely listening...
even reading is, in my own mind, an extension of listening, it's just listening for your eyes instead of your ears.

I don't know what it is that is so powerful about listening,
to the soft sounds of beautiful music,
the siren's whisper of a lover's voice,
the frantic tap dance of rain on the roof,
words moving across the page in a slow ballet,
the silence of nothingness...

To me, listening is the highest compliemtnn I can be paid for my work,
I don't care if someone likes my music, or hates it,
part of me cares, but nowhere near as much as i merely care that it be heard
...

I pour myself into my music,
I've been told I go into an intense, trancelike state while playing,
that's not a surprise, it's how I feel.
Playing music is the one time I feel connected
to the universe,
to the world around me,
to myself...

then
when i go back and listen
to the music that i created, or had a part in creating
for a moment,
the briefest time,
the blink of an eye, the spin of an atom
I get back that feeling,
that connection with everything

If i wish anything for those who listen to my music,
it's to feel that connection,
that completeness...
if even one person is touched that way, then i have succeeded...

do you hear what i hear?
